Monash University Foundation Year

The Monash University Foundation Year is a one-year program designed to prepare international students for study at Monash University or another Australian university.

You will have the opportunity to develop your English, academic, and learning skills in a supportive environment. Students are encouraged to choose the fields of study that suit their tertiary and career ambitions.

The Foundation Year program spans approximately 12 months over two semesters, with 720 hours of structured learning time. In Australia, classes are scheduled Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 5 pm.

Alternative formats

Everyone learns at a different level and speed. To enable students the best flexibility the Foundation Year is offered in two alternate formats.

  • Intensive - for students looking to fast-track their studies.
  • Extended - includes an additional semester designed to build on students' English language and academic skills.

Each format has different intake dates, entry requirements and duration.

Monash College also offers English language courses if you need extra support prior to starting the program.

Entry into the Foundation Year program is determined by age, academic and English language entry requirements. Your academic performance will be the main factor in deciding whether you enter the Standard, Intensive or Extended format of the program.

Minimum age

You must be 16 years of age or older when you enrol. If you are not 16, but you would otherwise have been offered a place, you will be offered a deferred place until you are 16. Students must be at least 17 years old to enter Monash University.

Academic requirements

Successful Foundation Year applicants will have a qualification equivalent to Australian Year 11.

For a complete list of country specific information, visit the Entry requirements page.

English language requirements

You will meet English language requirements if:

  • you have an IELTS score of 5.0 (no band lower than 5.0) or equivalent - for Extended format
  • you have completed Australian Year 11
  • your entire Australian Year 11 equivalent program was taught in English
  • you have achieved satisfactory grades in English.

For more information, visit the Entry Requirements page.

We encourage you to select subjects based on your skills, personal interests and career goals.
