Before you arrive checklist
You have to be organised when you are planning to study overseas. Use the following checklist as a guide to prepare for your journey.
Before you leave:
- Apply for your passport.
- Arrange your student visa.
- Arrange approved accommodation and guardianship (if you are under 18).
- Visit doctor for immunisations and any medical arrangements
(make sure you bring with you any medical documents of advise relating to a pre-existing condition).
- Book your flights.
- Pay for travel insurance.
- Apply for a credit card and/or arrange sufficient funds.
- Pre-open a bank account in Australia and transfer funds.
- Plan to bring $700–$1,000 in cash and at least $3,000 on a credit card or arrange a bank transfer.
- Find out your country's embassy or consulate details in Australia.
- Buy padlocks for luggage.
- Arrange free airport pick-up by completing the Airport Reception and Transfer Form.
- Organise accommodation.
- Check out the Enrolment and Orientation Program.
- Check customs and quarantine regulations – make sure any items that need to be declared are easily accessible.
- Pack some personal items such as photos or an address book with contact details of family and friends.
- Pack clothing that is both suitable for the climate. A thick warm jacket is recommended.
Before you get on the plane
In your hand luggage, you need to have a document folder with your:
- passport with student visa
- guardianship documents (if under 18)
- certified copies of qualifications and certificates
- Letter of Offer
- travel insurance policy
- Certificate of Enrolment (CoE)
- ID cards, drivers license, birth certificate (or copy) – all in English
- cash in Australian dollars for taxis, buses, phone calls (in the event of an emergency).
Remember to:
- Leave any originals or copies of documents safely with family in your home country .
- Keep the Monash College reception number handy .
- Contact us by emailing latereg@monash.edu-if you have any flight delays or difficulties .
Don't forget to bring:
- spare spectacles or contact lenses (and a copy of your prescription)
- camera, calculator and other electronic equipment
- bilingual dictionary (specialist dictionaries for your area of study will be helpful)
- references from previous landlords (if available), especially if you are planning to rent off-campus .
When you arrive in Australia
- Call home.
- Settle into your accommodation.
- Buy household items and food.
- Attend your enrolment and orientation program.
- Open a bank account.
- Buy textbooks.
- Apply for tax file number (if seeking work or opening a bank account).
- Start classes.
- Get involved in student activities.
