Students who volunteered at The Age Melbourne Run.

This trimester Monash College Diplomas implemented a new program called ‘Get Connected’. The program was established to enable students to meet other students in a social setting away from the classroom environment. It ran each Wednesday for the first six weeks of the trimester incorporating a different activity each week.
The program was tailored to provide students with a taste of cooking, sports, arts, logic, community involvement and video games. Providing a broad program to the student body enabled us to service the interests of many students. Some students attended the majority of program, while others chose to attend activities based on their interests. Students who attended had the opportunity to talk and laugh with other students who they had not met before. One student was ecstatic when he managed to meet another student from the same hometown. Each week students exchanged mobile numbers as they continued to develop the bond that began to form during the activities. Having an activity each week enabled students with a common interest to come together and participate.
A highlight of the program was certainly the community involvement activity. Students had the opportunity to volunteer at The Age: Kids run which was held on Saturday 14 July. We had a total of 26 student volunteers, 6 more than was anticipated. Students were assigned tasks for the entire race ranging from course marshals, drinks attendants or handing out showbags – just to name a few. Students ‘high fived’ all the children participating in the event, handed out participation medals and some even got to have their face painted! Students loved every minute of it. In appreciation of students volunteering, Event Management donated $25 per student to a chosen charity. Each student also received a personalised certificate which they can add to their resume.
It was a pleasure overseeing students in this capacity. Students took on their responsibilities in a professional manner and embraced the local community. Feedback provided by the event staff was that our Monash College volunteers where the best volunteers they had ever had.
The ‘Get Connected’ program is in its early stages; hopefully next trimester we can expand it further and spread the word and increase attendees. The aim is to eventually have staff coming along and share in these activities with our students.
