Australian bushfire crisis

With many rural and regional areas of Australia currently experiencing bushfires our hearts are heavy for Australian communities and ecosystems devastated by the bushfires. We understand our students and their families may have some concerns with the uncertainty these fires cause, so we wanted to provide an update on the situation.

College operations

The safety of the Monash community is our priority, and there are a number of ways we’re supporting our students and staff. While our campuses aren’t directly impacted by the fires, we’re closely monitoring the conditions to ensure we’re providing a safe environment for our students and staff. At this stage, all planned staff and student activities will continue as usual.

VicHealth and the Australian Chief Medical Officer will advise of appropriate precautions if required. If there are any impacts, these will be communicated through the College’s official channels. The Environment Protection Authority has warned bushfires may impact Victoria’s air quality and have provided guidelines on smoke safety. If you experience breathing difficulties or other symptoms related to the smoky conditions, please seek medical advice.

Counselling for students and staff

Monash College provides free confidential counselling for students and staff affected by the fires. Students can also access counselling services here or here for staff.

Stay safe

Please follow the advice of authorities and stay away from bushfire-affected areas. If anyone has immediate concerns, please continue to check for information.

If you wish to make a financial contribution to bushfire relief, there are many community organisations offering ways to do this. Additionally, the Victorian government has established the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
