Global Communication for Future Leaders

Monash College is 100 percent owned by Monash University, Australia’s largest university. We are a leader in conducting customised short courses and pre-university programs for international students.

Global Communication for Future Leaders is a short-term study experience to help shape your future career.

Together with your virtual classmates, you will develop casual and business communication skills, and study topics that are relevant to your field of study.

You will engage in a wide variety of learning activities including reading and listening to authentic texts such as news articles, participating in group discussions, delivering role-plays and presentations, and critically reflecting on your own experiences.

Enrolments are now open for the next course. There are three course entry points;

  • 2 August – 20 August 2021
  • 9 August – 27 August 2021
  • 16 August – 3 September 2021

Monash College has been an industry leader in innovative eLearning practices. The Virtual Classroom consolidates this experience with delivering courses online using the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) and collaborative Google Suite, while introducing a video classroom for interaction with the teacher and other learners on Zoom.

Students will work together on a range of other digital learning platforms for coursework and assessment including eBooks and online quizzes.

Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week
LevelsThe course is designed for students at Intermediate and Advanced levels, and students will be placed based on English language test and/or short interview results;
  • Intermediate; IELTS 4.0-5.0
  • Advanced; IELTS 5.5-6.5
Independent studyStudents are expected to complete approximately 10 hours a week of self-directed learning outside class times to reinforce the concepts, skills and communicative focus of the Virtual Classwork. This includes reviewing classwork, engaging in structured web research, participating in group work, and preparing presentations.
EligibilityMinimum English level of IELTS 4.0 or equivalent. (TOEFL IBT 31, TOEFL ITP 400, Duolingo 55). Students without an IELTS score may be required to participate in a short interview.

Levels

This program is designed for students at Intermediate to Advanced levels;

  • Intermediate – IELTS 4.0 - 5.0 or equivalent
  • Advanced – IELTS 5.5 - 6.5 or equivalent

In the intermediate stream, the focus is on developing fluency in English to enable engagement in everyday conversation topics including culture and global business. The intermediate stream has a greater focus on English language skills than the advanced stream.

In the advanced stream, there is a greater focus on improving English literacy; the stream focuses on topics students are likely to need a working knowledge of, including global workplace and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Intermediate level themes

Stories and Opinions

Speaking and listening skills for sharing stories and opinions about current affairs. Introduction to the Virtual Classroom, language for engaging in an online environment, and Australian English.

Everyday Conversation

Speaking and listening skills for everyday conversation, including expressing likes and dislikes, stopping and starting discussions, clarifying misunderstandings, engaging in polite disagreements and catching up with friends and acquaintances.

Culture

Introduction to cultural differences, including non-verbal communication such as body language. Develop familiarity with key concepts in cross-cultural awareness, research a foreign culture in groups and deliver a structured oral presentation.

Global Careers

Business English skills with an emphasis on communicating and working with colleagues in a more formal context. Develop skills for spoken interaction in the workplace, delivering professional presentations and applying cross-cultural awareness in a business context.

Advanced level themes

Media and Communication

The nature of media and digital information in the 21st century, using case studies on transparency and reliability in news media, the role of business in media environments and the importance of digital devices in a global media ecology.

Urbanisation and Environmental Problems

Exercising professional innovation and ingenuity in the face of complex problems, using case studies on technological improvements to urban environments and safeguarding rapidly growing populations.

Sustainable Development

Fostering a sustainable mindset on issues linked with globalised business, trade, law and production, using case studies on disposable fashion and excess waste. Individual, corporate and government responsibility in multinational society.

Global Workplace

Developing Advanced Business English skills with an emphasis on communicating with various stakeholders both within and outside an organisation. Develop skills for communicating effectively in meetings and networking events, as well as building a personal brand.

Monash College offers a range of extra-curricular activities, which will complement the class experience;

English Workshops

  • Perfect Pronunciation - This workshop focuses on identifying and producing the sounds of English in a systematic and practical way. You will be given lots of interesting exercises to practice the sounds and you will work both by yourself and with other students.
  • Communicating through music and lyrics - Guided by the teacher, you will explore a range of popular English songs with other students and participate in a variety of activities analysing the lyrics and their meaning. Everyone will then join in to sing along like a star!

Leadership Workshops

  • Empowering others - Learn the tips and tricks to master communication skills. Apply your knowledge into practice to empower those around you.
  • Becoming Global Citizens - Gain insights into different qualities of a global citizen. Learn how to improve and practice global mindset in your daily lives.
