The HKDSE has two grading scales depending on the school at which the qualification was undertaken.

A maximum of 1 bonus point is offered when achieving Level 5** or Level 5* in a HKDSE Category A subject.

Grading scale: 
Level 1 = 1 point Level 2 = 2 points Level 3 = 3 points Level 4 = 4 points Level 5 = 5 points

Hong Kong A Levels

Total score of a maximum of the best 3 A Level subject examinations taken in one sitting*. Two AS level subjects can be counted in place of one A level subject, provided that the subject has not been taken at A Level, and there is at least one A level subject is included in the calculation.

Two AS level subject may be substituted for one low or failed A level. To calculate: remove the low or failed A level result from the overall calculation and replace it with the combined score from the two AS level subjects using the points shown above. No subjects are excluded from calculation.

*Examinations are taken after completion of a full time two year sixth form course.

Grading scale:
A level: A = 5 B = 4 C = 3 D = 2 E = 1
AS level: A = 2.5 B = 2 C = 1.5 D = 1 E = 0.5
