Monash English (commencing July 2023)

With Monash English you are future ready to study and work.

Monash English is your stepping stone to a top 50 ranked university1 in the world. This program has been designed for students who have narrowly missed the academic requirements of their destination program. Upon successful completion of the English program, you will gain direct entry into a Monash University degree or Monash College programs.2

With Monash English, you will develop the English language and academic skills required for pursuing a foundation year, diplomas, undergraduate, graduate and higher degrees of research courses at Monash – without the need to sit for an IELTS test.

Course outcomes

As a Monash English student, you will:

  • Develop your proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Extend your range and use of academic vocabulary
  • Apply a range of skills needed to understand complex reading and listening texts
  • Speak clearly and confidently in a range of contexts
  • Learn to listen and understand a range of English accents
  • Understand the particular way of communicating in your own culture and other cultures and the
    misunderstandings that may occur
  • Express ideas in writing following Australian academic conventions
  • Develop your research literacy skills
  • Learn to communicate effectively in social conversations, academic discussions and presentations

Course assessment

To help you stay on track with your studies, we have designed a learning model that maps your learning progression, builds skills and measures achievement of these skills through capability assessments providing you with real-time data on progress and performance.

Throughout the program you will complete both small group and individual assessments allowing us to put interventions in place earlier to make sure you succeed.

Your teacher will provide you with individualised feedback through their weekly consultation time.

If you are unsuccessful in passing the Monash English program you can repeat the 10-week Module.3

Course information

Duration From one to four 10-week modules depending on placement test and English requirements of destination course.
Start date Eight intakes per year, aligned with the Monash College and Monash University programs start dates.
Campus Docklands campus, Melbourne.
Class timesMonday – Friday (10am – 2 pm and 2pm – 6pm)

Please note that we are not able to accommodate individual student timetable requests.
Class size

We have a limit of 18 students in our classes, and our classes are designed to maximise your use of English throughout the day. You will receive dedicated support from your teachers in a dynamic learning environment. You will have access to the interactive material we have designed to support your learning.

Contact hours

20 hours per week + 15 hours independent study.

Validity

Monash English results are valid for 12 months.

Meet a student

Destination programs

The following destination programs accept Monash English as meeting their English language requirements.

After completing the required level of Monash English, you can enter Foundation Year, Monash College Diplomas, or your chose University degree without sitting an IELTS test.4

Entry requirements

You can enter Monash English at any level.

You will need to sit an IELTS/TOEFL/Pearson test or you can take the Duolingo English Test, Monash College’s current English Placement Test.

After we have assessed your application, we will send you an offer for the number of Modules of Monash English study that we recommend for you. See below for a guide to the entry requirement for each Module.

Modules to be completed

The number of modules you complete will depend on your destination course and your current level of English. For instance if you are interested in joining Foundation Year (Standard) and your IELTS score (or equivalent) is 4.5 you will need to complete Module 1 and 2.
